10 Amazing Facts About Tigers 🐯

Let's set off on an exciting journey on the trail of the tigers 😃 🐯

1) Tigers are the biggest wild cats in the world! An adult tiger can weigh up to 363 kg (800 lb) – that’s about as much as ten ten-year-olds! Tigers can grow to around three and a half meters long!

2) Tigers are carnivores, which means they eat only meat. They mostly hunt large mammals like deer, wild boar, antelope and buffalo.

3) Tigers hunt alone, usually at night. They quietly stalk their prey until they’re close enough to pounce – and then they catch it with a bite to the neck or the back of the head. Ouch!

4) Tigers are great swimmers! Unlike most members of the cat family, they love water and often swim for fun in pools and streams.

5) A tiger’s roar can be heard up to three kilometers away. So when a tiger wants to be heard, you’ll know about it! 😀

6) At top speed, tigers can run up to 65 km/h (40 mph). That’s right – they may be big and heavy, but tigers are quick and agile!

7) No two tigers have the same stripes. Every tiger has its own pattern on its fur, so each one is unique! (Just like fingerprints – every person has their own one-of-a-kind fingerprint.)

8) Tigers’ cousins, leopards, once lived in Israel too – they were spotted there until about twenty years ago. There have been signs of them in the Jordan Valley thickets south of the Sea of Galilee, in the Golan Heights and near the Lebanese border – especially in the Jordan Valley, which is rich in plants, water and prey.

9) Israel’s own big cat is called the Arabian leopard. It’s the smallest kind of leopard and weighs only 25–40 kg! Its back is pale yellow with black spots, which gives it great camouflage in the desert landscape of the Negev, where it used to live.

10) The last leopard seen in the area even got a name: “Haritun.” It used to show up near homes at Kibbutz Ein Gedi by the Dead Sea. The people there treated it with respect – even though it sometimes hunted cats and dogs – and saw it as part of the natural landscape.
